Enzo Fernandez and Malo Gusto double transfer set to ensure record-breaking Chelsea window

Lyon do not want to sell the France Under-21 international, but Chelsea have shown ever since Todd Boehly bought the club last year that they will pay big money to land their targets. Gusto is a long-term target of Chelsea's and one they have confidence they can sign before the transfer deadline next week.

If they do arrive at Stamford Bridge in the coming days, then they will be Chelsea's seventh and eighth signing of the January transfer window. David Datro Fofana, Benoit Badiashile, Andrey Santos, Joao Felix, Mykhailo Mudryk and Noni Madueke have all arrived at the club already this month.

This amount of players in a mid-season window seems unprecedented but interestingly enough, Chelsea did sign six players – the exact amount they're on right now – during the 2011/12 campaign. Kevin De Bruyne, Gary Cahill, Patrick Bamford and Lucas Piazon were among those signed back in January 2012.

Apart from that, January windows under Roman Abramovich tended to be rather quiet. In fact, there were a couple of instances, during January 2007 and 2010, where Chelsea did not even make one signing.

Last winter, Chelsea brought just two players to the club – with Mason Burstow and Dylan Williams both arriving to join the academy system. It couldn't look any different 12 months on, with six signings already been made and the majority of them being brought in to try and improve the first-team squad immeChelsea are looking to complete two more signings before next week's transfer deadline and that would ensure of a record-breaking window for the west London club

Chelsea have already signed six players this month and their business is not done there. football.london understands the Blues are pursuing at least two more signings before the window closes next week.

It's two players in the positions Chelsea supporters have been crying out for, for some time now. Enzo Fernandez, a Benfica central midfielder, and Malo Gusto, a Lyon right-back, are the two men the west Londoners are looking to sign in the coming days.

As football.london reported on Monday afternoon, Chelsea are expected to approach Benfica in the final days of the transfer window over Fernandez. The Blues made the Argentine midfielder their number one target before the window officially opened, but they couldn't agree on a valuation for the 21-year-old, with the Portuguese club wanting £105million.

However, with around a week remaining of the January window, Chelsea are now set to revisit the situation and see if Benfica's stance has changed at all. The Blues know that having the lure of the Champions League to boast in the summer is a long shot, so this month may be their best chance of persuading one of world football's most sought-after midfield talents to join the club.

Meanwhile, football.london was also told by multiple sources on Monday that Chelsea have held preliminary talks with Lyon over Gusto. The 19-year-old has been identified as the ideal right-back to come in and support Reece James, who has struggled with injury problems over the past couple of seasons.
